Staple Fiction is an Australian production company, co-founded by producer Bethany Bruce, producing and developing socially relevant and authentic stories for international audiences across narrative and documentary. Female writers and directors helmed the company’s last five productions.

Staple Fiction’s recent film and digital productions include The Art of Collecting, a short documentary for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on artists' personal collections and The Butter Scene based on actor Maria Schneider’s experiences on the set of Last Tango in Paris starring Tara Morice (Sydney Film Festival, 2021) both directed by Kate Blackmore. Other projects include Broken Line North, with writer and director Sunday Emerson Gullifer, funded by the Lexus Australia Short Film Fellowship, which premiered at the 2019 Sydney Film Festival. In addition, Video Becomes Us — an original art series commissioned by the ABC premiered on ABC iview in 2018 and was written and directed by Kate Blackmore. 

Wolf, a short film produced by Bethany Bruce with writer and director Liz Cooper, was financed by the Screen NSW Emerging Filmmakers Fund and was nominated in the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA) Social Shorts drama category in 2017. 

The company’s short films have screened at internationally acclaimed film festivals, including Palm Springs, Melbourne International Film Festival, Cinequest, Flickerfest and Sydney Film Festival. Previous documentary commissions include Suicide and Me (2013), directed by Corrie Chen for ABC. 

Staple Fiction is currently in post-production on Make It Look Real (2024), a feature documentary with director Kate Blackmore and a co-production with Projector Films (Martha: A Picture Story) about the unusual job of a Hollywood intimacy coordinator, supported in development by Screen Australia, Create NSW and the SAFC. Autlook Filmsales represents the film for international sales. Other projects are in co-production and development at earlier stages.
